The author is the acclaimed Guardian writer, Michael Simmons. The pictures are by celebrated photographer Kate Bellis.
Together the writer and photographer have produced a compelling picture
of the men, women and children of the Peak.

In 1951 the Peak became Britain's first National Park. Since then this hauntingly beautiful land has been kept alive by the
traditionalmanagement methods of hill farming families.

But when Bellis walked into her first Derbyshire farm kitchen, and Simmons began his essay, foot and mouth
was a mere memoryfrom the 1960's. By the time they finished, many hill farmers faced ruin.

Now, more than ever before, these resilient communities are On The Edge.
